THE WAR MEMORIAL
The PARISH CHURCH OF ST MARY, NEWPORT, ESSEX
The Newport War memorial was erected by public subscription. It is in the form of a cross on a massive stepped base, the whole in white Aberdeen granite. It was dedicated by the Bishop of Chelmsford in May 1920 to commemorate those who fell in the Great War.
The main inscription on the west face of the base of the cross reads:
THIS CROSS
WAS ERECTED BY
THE PARISHIONERS OF NEWPORT
IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR
LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 – 1919
“THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”
The names of the 41 who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the south and north faces of the memorial. The east face is blank.

In addition to the Village Memorial some of the above who died in the 1914-18 conflict are commemorated on family monuments and/or Imperial War Commission Gravestones in the church and cemetery. They include G F Westwood, H M Mansfield, R S Dellow, B Trundle, W J Poulter, Olive Scott and S A S Barthropp. There are also three memorials to men who gave their lives in the 1914-18 war, namely C J Judd, G Nosfield (Canadian Artillery) and W Jackson (Essex Regiment) who had some connection with Newport.
After the second World War there was an extended discussion with respect to a suitable memorial. It was 1955 before a Bronze Plaque was added to the original white monument on a temporary basis and dedicated by the commanding officer of Debden on Armistice Day. It reads:

There are also War grave memorials to Wing Commander R B Cox, RAF who died in 1941 and Private Olive D Scott of Newport who died in 1945. J A Clover, 1st Royal Navy Carbineers who was killed in North Africa in 1942, is commemorated on the gravestone of his grandfather, Dr Alexander Smith. There are also War Grave Commission memorials to Z W Kaye, W H Jackson and W Hannant, RAF killed in a flying accident in 1960.
